ROK Technologies’ Esri UC 2024 Experience: The Highlights

The Esri User Conference (UC) 2024 in sunny San Diego, California July 16-18 was an event to remember, and ROK Technologies was right there in the thick of it all. This year’s theme, GIS Uniting Our World as shared by Esri, was to remind us that with GIS we can “address the world’s most pressing challenges – climate change, resource management, public health and disaster response –  to deliver a better tomorrow, even as our world faces many challenges today. By building a comprehensive, diverse, location-based understanding of complex issues, we can work together to make informed decisions that affect the well-being of our planet.”

There were over 20,000 GIS enthusiasts attending this year’s conference from 143 countries. ROK Technologies, while only one of two Platinum Sponsors, was among almost 200 exhibitors and sponsors on the Expo floor! And our booth stood out—not just because of our stellar Cloud, Esri and technology expertise—but also in part to our Southern roots, cornhole-style game, “How much GIS can you take to the Cloud?” It wasn’t just a game; it was a conversation starter, bringing in curious minds and GIS enthusiasts eager to explore the possibilities of cloud integration.

Conversations that matter

This year, our team was met with a wide range of questions, reflecting the evolving landscape of GIS and cloud technologies. We saw a noticeable uptick in inquiries about AI and machine learning, with several attendees keen on understanding how these technologies can be leveraged within GIS. Kubernetes was another hot topic, with many asking for specific guidance on managing cloud deployments—especially those dealing with off-prem and on-prem setups.

Our team, armed with expertise, were ready to sketch on the whiteboard easel, pull up examples on tablets and sit down on the couch for a deep diver Q&A. Over three energy-filled days, the team provided valuable insights, proving that ROK doesn’t just lead in Cloud solutions but offers sound advice on a broad spectrum of GIS-related challenges. As our CTO frequently reinforces, “at our core we are GIS nerds and really just want to talk shop.”

One of the more exciting highlights for the ROK architecture team was Esri’s shift towards more explicit guidance on cloud integration and security. Their sessions on Kubernetes and security were packed with useful tips, reflecting a newfound commitment to helping users navigate the complex world of cloud services. This was a welcome change and led to engaging follow-up Kubernetes’ conversations at our booth.

ROK’s Expo Message

ROK Technologies’ booth was just to the right of the UC information desk and so we had a ton of conference attendees stopping by. Our clients, partners and Esri representatives came by to say hello and feed off the excitement and energy from our booth.

We’ve always believed that business and pleasure are not mutually exclusive. Our team is full of optimistic future-centric individuals who want the world to experience the benefits of being in the Cloud. We heard from several of the booth visitors that they appreciated the ability to “move and laugh” in between the sessions and presentations.

Part of the ROK experience is that when you infuse work with fun, you create an environment where creativity thrives, strong relationships are built, and true innovation happens. Our success isn’t just a testament to our expertise—it is proof that a company that plays together, wins together.

“Fun isn't just a perk for us; it's a powerful tool that drives our resilience, dynamism, and lasting success.”

International interest continues to grow

We also had discussions with international GIS enthusiasts – some a continuation from last year’s event – who are increasingly interested in Cloud solutions but face unique regulatory challenges. These chats  highlighted the growing demand for GIS Managed Cloud Services in global markets and underscored the need for ROK to continue innovating to meet diverse data policies and security requirements.

Looking ahead to 2025

As we flew back home, the team felt a renewed sense of purpose. The Esri UC 2024 reinforced that ROK Technologies is not just keeping pace with the GIS industry—we’re leading the charge supported by our Cloud partners. We’re excited to continue providing top-tier cloud solutions while expanding our expertise into new areas, ensuring that we remain the go-to experts in the field.
