Tips & Tricks to Optimize your ArcGIS Enterprise for Speed

ArcGIS Enterprise speed issues may arise from resource limitations, suboptimal configurations, or challenges with managing large datasets and growing user demands. These performance bottlenecks can stem from underpowered servers, inefficient workflows, or poorly optimized Cloud implementations. In this session, ROK Technologies’ experts will share actionable tips to address these challenges, helping you enhance system efficiency and deliver faster, more reliable GIS solutions.

Join ROK Technologies to commemorate GIS Day’s 25th anniversary with a live session hosted by our IT, Cloud and Esri experts (bios below). During this webinar, we will walk through proven strategies to maximize the efficiency and speed of your ArcGIS Enterprise.

How frequently should maintenance be performed on ArcGIS Enterprise, and what does it entail?

For database maintenance, it's recommended to rebuild spatial indexes and compress the database on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. This helps maintain performance. For infrastructure maintenance, such as operating system patching, a monthly cycle is generally a good recommendation. The specific frequency can vary based on the organization's service level agreements and needs.

What Python scripts are useful for GIS administrators to enhance performance?

The usefulness of Python scripts really depends on the specific use case and what the administrator is trying to optimize. For example, automating server instance scaling and streamlining data workflows or managing resources dynamically. There is no one-size-fits-all solution, as Python can be used to automate a wide range of tasks. The key is to identify the pain points or areas for improvement and then develop scripts to address those needs.

What security measures could impact performance?

Antivirus settings and configurations can have a significant impact on performance if the antivirus is actively scanning files and folders in real-time. Ensuring proper exclusions and scheduling of antivirus scans can help mitigate this. Additionally, firewall rules and port configurations that are not aligned with ESRI's recommendations can also lead to performance degradation. Keeping enterprise and database resources within the same hosted network improves efficiency and security as well.

How should data sets with multiple contributors be configured to best manage the data?

Implementing version control and data governance processes is crucial when dealing with data sets with multiple contributors. This includes establishing clear roles and permissions, as well as workflow processes to prevent conflicts and maintain data integrity. Versioning, either through web-based or traditional methods, can also help manage changes and track contributions.

At what storage utilization threshold should organizations start looking to add more storage capacity?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer, as it depends on the size of the storage drives and the specific data usage patterns. However, a general recommendation is to start considering adding more storage capacity when the utilization reaches around 80-90% of the total available space. This provides a buffer to avoid performance issues and ensure there is enough space for future data growth and to operate efficiently without running out of storage.
